In 2005 GEDA consolidated efforts to reposition itself from being just an investment promotion agency to a fully fledged economic development agency. This process entailed the realignment of GEDAs strategic plans to the Gauteng Provincial Government priorities, as well as refocusing the business to ensure an effective smart access for business into Africa. GEDA’s core mandate revolves around two interconnected areas, Investment and Trade Facilitation (ITF) and Local and Economic Development (LED). The ITF’s core areas revolve around providing support to investors wanting to invest in the Gauteng Province and LED around providing support for local economic development initiatives. In addition GEDA will strengthen efforts aimed at promoting Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, the development of SMMEs and cooperatives. As part of GEDAs expanded mandate, the agency will contribute to the strengthening of the South-South relations and NEPAD initiatives by promoting trade and investment between Gauteng and countries such as India, Brazil and the rest of the African continent.
